LONDON - Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday named Ange Postecoglou their new coach on a four-year contract.

The 57-year-old leaves Celtic after two successful seasons to become the first Australian to work in the Premier League.

He starts work on July 1 with the aim of restoring Tottenham to European football after this season's disappointing eighth-place finish, ending the campaign behind Brighton and Aston Villa.

"Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play," commented Tottenham's chairman Daniel Levy.

Ange Postecoglou has also won titles in his homeland with South Melbourne and Brisbane Roar and in Japan with Yokohama F. Marinos, and coached the Australian national team to the 2015 AFC Asian Cup

"He has a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy; everything that is important to our club," he added.

Meanwhile, Postecoglou thanked Celtic for his time at the club, where he won five out of six domestic trophies in two seasons.

"They wanted me to extend my time at Celtic and while I am so respectful and understanding of their position, a new opportunity has been presented to me and it is one which I wanted to explore," he commented.

The Australian has also won titles in his homeland with South Melbourne and Brisbane Roar and in Japan with Yokohama F. Marinos, and coached the Australian national team to the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

One of his first tasks on starting work will be to try to persuade England captain Harry Kane to remain at the club. Kane is going to be in the last year of his contract and is bound to be frustrated with the chance to play in Europe. With both Manchester United and Real Madrid rumored to be interested, the striker's future is far from certain.
