TOKYO - Chinese shuttlers had mixed results as the Japan Open badminton tournament kicked off here on Tuesday.
China's top men's singles player Shi Yuqi won 21-17, 21-12 over Angus Ng Ka-long of Hong Kong, China in the round of 32, but two of his teammates were ousted.
Zhao Junpeng was beaten 21-13, 21-15 by Cheuk Yiu-lee of Hong Kong, China, while Li Shifeng lost to India's Prannoy H.S. 21-17, 21-13.
In the women's singles, China's reigning Olympic champion Chen Yufei bested Sim Yu-jin of South Korea 21-13, 21-12, He Bingjiao overcame Denmark's Mia Blichfeldt 13-21, 21-11, 21-19, and Wang Zhiyi beat Dane Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt 21-12, 21-19.

In the mixed doubles, Chinese top-seeded pair Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong smashed Japanese duo Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito 21-8, 21-13 in a quick match that lasted only 29 minutes.

Three Chinese women's pairs failed to make it to the next round on Tuesday, as Japan's Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota upset China's duo Li Wenmei and Liu Xuanxuan 21-17, 21-14.
Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu were defeated 21-18, 21-19 by Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai of Thailand, while Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning went down to Malaysia's Pearly Tan and Muralitharan Thinaah 21-11, 9-21, 21-19.

In the men's doubles, China's Chen Boyang and Liu Yi lost to Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei 21-17, 21-11.
The 2023 Japan Open will run until Sunday at Tokyo's Yoyogi National Stadium.
