“Although there are always ups and downs during the contests, falling behind does not mean failure. The key is to have confidence and to seize every opportunity that arises in the contest,” she said.

Hsieh was also a bronze medalist in the women’s team epee at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and represented Hong Kong in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Hsieh said she will strive to improve her performance at the upcoming Asian Games, to be held in Hangzhou, East China’s Zhejiang province, from Sept 23 to Oct 8.

Hong Kong sent 142 athletes, its largest delegation in the games’ history, to compete in Chengdu. As of Thursday, the delegation of Hong Kong, China, ranked 16 on the medal table.

In an interview with China Daily, Li Ching, coach of the Hong Kong women’s table tennis team, said he was glad to see that Hong Kong’s female players have given full play to their strengths and advantages at the University Games.

Li noted that young athletes can gain valuable experience from international competitions such as the University Games, and mature quickly. He added that Hong Kong players’ record-breaking performance at the Universiade will definitely inspire those who will be representing the city at the upcoming Asian Games.

The University Games, organized by the International University Sports Federation, is an international multi-sports event for university athletes. China hosted Universiade’s Summer Games in Beijing in 2001 and in Shenzhen of Guangdong province, in 2011, as well as holding the event’s Winter Games in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, in 2009.
