Hong Kong’s athletic prowess reached new heights at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou as the city delegation on Wednesday topped its previous Asiad record of 46 medals, set at the last Asian Games, with 50 medals at the ongoing Games.

The city so far is 10th in the goldmedal tally with seven. The Hong Kong team also has won 15 silvers and 28 bronzes, seventh place in the overall medal count.

On Wednesday, the city took home five medals, including a gold in road cycling, three bronzes in squash, and a bronze in contract bridge.

The most recent gold medal, secured by cyclist Yang Qianyu in the women’s road race, was the city’s first medal in this event at the Asian Games.

“It feels like a dream. Winning this gold at the Asian Games, I have no regrets about my cycling career!” Yang said after the race, as tears of joy streamed down her face.

Yang competed against 19 cyclists, including teammate Lee Sze-wing, in the final. Yang narrowly held off the defending gold medalist, Na Ah-reum from South Korea, winning the gold by finishing 139.7 kilometers in 3 hours, 36 minutes, 7 seconds.

In the mixed doubles semifinals of squash, Lee Ka-yi and Wong Chi-him lost 2-1 to India’s Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Sandhu, and obtained the bronze medal, as there was no third-place playoff.

In the women’s singles squash semifinal, Chan Sin-yuk defeated her teammate Ho Tze-lo, and secured her spot in the final and at least a silver medal. Ho claimed a bronze medal.

Chan will face Sivasangari Subramaniam from Malaysia at 4 pm on Thursday.

The men’s team will be playing for a gold medal on Thursday.

The city’s badminton team made progress on Wednesday as well by advancing to the quarterfinals in three events.

In the mixed doubles, Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet earned a quick win by defeating the Singaporean pair 2-0 in 32 minutes, and advanced to the last eight. They will face Japanese duo Watanabe Yuta and Higashino Arisa at 5 pm today.

Men’s doubles competitors Law Cheuk-him and Yeung Shing-choi advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating the Pakistani pair. They will face the South Korean duo Choi Sol-gyu and Kim Won-ho, who defeated a national team duo in the previous round.

Women’s doubles competitors Yeung Nga-ting and Yeung Pui-lam showed great resilience as they staged a comeback to book their place in the quarterfinals.

The Hong Kong pair had to fight it out to defeat the Chinese Taipei pair Lee Chia-hsin and Teng Chun-hsun 19-21, 21-15, 21-19.

In the much anticipated soccer semifinal, Hong Kong players were defeated 4-0 by Asian powerhouse Japan. The team will contest for a bronze medal on Saturday, attempting to take their new best performance — as beaten semifinalists — one step further.
