China offers condolences to Afghanistan over deadly quake

China mourns the victims and offers sympathies to the injured and the families who have lost loved ones, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sunday after powerful earthquakes in Afghanistan have caused heavy casualties.

It was reported that magnitude-6.2 earthquakes hit Herat province in western Afghanistan on Saturday, killing more than 2,000 and injuring nearly 10,000 so far.

A spokesperson confirmed in the statement that so far no injuries or deaths of Chinese nationals were found in the quakes.

"We believe that the people of Afghanistan will overcome the impact of the disaster and rebuild their homes at an early date," the spokesperson said.
