Iraq condemns Iran's missile attack on Erbil

BAGHDAD - Iraq on Tuesday condemned Iran's missile attack on the city of Erbil, the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, considering it an "aggression" against the country's sovereignty and "abuse to the good neighborliness."

The Iraqi government "expresses its strong denunciation and condemnation of the Iranian aggression with ballistic missiles on safe residential places, which led to civilian casualties," the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani decided to form a committee headed by the National Security Advisor "to investigate the attack and collect information to support the government's position internationally"

The government of Iraq "considers this behavior an aggression against the sovereignty of Iraq and the security of its people, and a violation of good neighborliness," the statement said.

It added that Iraq would take all legal measures against the attack, including submitting a complaint to the United Nations Security Council.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani decided to form a committee headed by the National Security Advisor "to investigate the attack and collect information to support the government's position internationally by providing evidence and accurate information."

Late Monday, the Kurdistan Region Security Council said in a statement that four people were killed and six others injured when Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired ballistic missiles on "several populated civilian areas" in Erbil.

Meanwhile, the IRGC said in a statement that it had launched missile attacks on "spy headquarters" in the region, according to Iran's official IRNA news agency.
