Young pianist Audrey Sung on Monday donated money and anti-epidemic supplies, including face masks, to a charity foundation to help fight the novel coronavirus in Hong Kong.
Wan Wai-to, chairman of the charity foundation, said it is “very touching” to receive the donation and supplies at such a crucial time for Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland’s fight against the coronavirus epidemic.
The Hong Kong Children Charity Foundation will use the money, totaling HK$360,000 (more than US$46,100), and the supplies to support needy exceptional children and elderly people living alone in the city.
Sung, a 10-year-old girl studying at Harrow International School Hong Kong, is a talented and famous young pianist in the city.
Wan Wai-to, chairman of the charity foundation, said it is “very touching” to receive the donation and supplies at such a crucial time for Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland’s fight against the coronavirus epidemic.
Sung is the foundation’s youngest donor so far, he said, praising the young pianist’s benevolence and kindness.
Wan believes Sung will serve the society and continue to excel in her musical journey.
He promised that the Hong Kong Children Charity Foundation will make good use of the special donation and have volunteers send them to the needy elderly and exceptional children as soon as possible.
Just before her 10th birthday, which is Feb 25, Sung expressed her wish to her parents that she wanted to donate her red-pocket money and proceeds from her recent performances, totaling HK$360,000, to people in need. Her parents expressed their full support for their daughter's special "birthday request".
Sung began to learn piano at the age of six and practices hard for 6 to 8 hours a day. She was apprenticed to famous masters. She took part in many music competitions in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, Europe and the United States, and has won numerous international awards.
In Hong Kong, 79 have been firmed to be infected by the novel coronavirus by Monday, with two fatalities reported.
