HONG KONG - Hong Kong on Tuesday recorded 30 new COVID-19 infections caused by the novel coronavirus, taking the city's tally to 386.

About two-thirds of the new patients have a history of travel outside the city.

The government also announced that canteens at public hospitals will offer only takeaway service for patients and visitors

It is the fourth time in a week for the financial hub to report more than 30 new cases in a single day.

The 18 males and 12 females are aged between 15 and 66. Nineteen of them traveled overseas during the incubation period. Among the travelers were two students, one flight attendant and one tour guide who was in a group with about 20 people to Turkey and western Europe.

For those who had no travel record, five are members of a band that had played at bars in Lan Kwai Fong, one had attended a wedding banquet, and one had been to an outdoor party where more than 100 guests attended in Wong Chuk Hang in southern Hong Kong Island.

One new patient had visited Macao.

So far, a total of 10 patients could be traced to the wedding party, seven were related to the band in Lan Kwai Fong, and five went to the Wong Chuk Hang party, Head of the Communicable Disease Branch of the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health, Chuang Shuk-kwan said at a press briefing.

Chuang said while the government can ban the sale of alcohol at restaurants and entertaining avenues, private gatherings are beyond its control.

Warning that any kind of social gathering is of high risk of cross infection, Chuang said that it’s the responsibility of everyone in the community to observe social distancing to help contain the spread of the virus in Hong Kong.

Noting that a doctor with the Department of Health was confirmed to be infected on Monday, Chuang said the person was responsible for issuing quarantine order and explaining relevant information to international arrivals at the airport.

The job was of relatively low risk, and the doctor was wearing protective clothing, Chuang said, adding that the authorities will review protective measures for medical staff at the airport for improvements.

A co-worker of the infected doctor at the airport, who had suspicious symptoms, was tested negative to the virus, she said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Department of Health issued 28,805 quarantine orders to international arrivals. As of Monday, 71,898 quarantine orders were issued to mainland arrivals, Chuang said.

One more patient was discharged from the hospital, taking the total number of recovered patients to 102.

The occupation rate of the city’s isolation beds is now over 50 percent, health authorities said.

Also on Tuesday, the government announced that canteens at the city’s public hospitals will offer only takeaway service for patients and visitors. The announcement came after a confirmed patient was found to have dined at a canteen on Saturday after returning his deep throat saliva specimen to the hospital.
