Beijing sees 9 fresh COVID-19 cases out of mainland's 18

BEIJING -- Beijing reported nine newly confirmed COVID-19 cases transmitted locally, two suspected cases and five asymptomatic cases Sunday, the municipal health commission said Monday.

From June 11 to 21, Beijing had reported 236 confirmed local cases, all of which are receiving treatment in hospitals.

Meanwhile, there are 22 asymptomatic cases still under medical observation, and one imported case hospitalized in Beijing, the commission said.

A total of 18 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported on the Chinese mainland Sunday, of which 11 were transmitted domestically and seven were imported, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

In addition to the nine local cases reported in Beijing, two others were reported in neighboring Hebei province, the commission said.

For the new imported cases, three were reported in Shanghai, two in Shaanxi, one in Tianjin, and one in Liaoning, the commission said.

No deaths related COVID-19 were reported Sunday, according to the commission.

There were 349 COVID-19 patients still being treated on the mainland, including 12 in severe condition, the commission said.

Authorities in Beijing said on Monday they had launched a blanket search and testing campaign among the city's construction sites, where three confirmed COVID-19 cases emerged.

The Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development said at a press conference on Monday afternoon that three cases were reported from two construction sites in Beijing.

The commission said it had checked 435 projects in the city, and given nucleic acid tests to 1,622 people there who had visited or contacted people from the Xinfadi food market.

The two construction sites, where the confirmed cases were reported, have been put under closed-off management, it said.

As of Sunday, a total of 83,396 confirmed COVID-19 cases had been reported on the mainland, including 4,634 deaths.

Altogether, 78,413 patients had been cured of the disease and discharged from hospitals by Sunday.

By Sunday, a total of 1,876 imported cases had been reported on the mainland, of which 1,787 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery while 89 remained hospitalized, the commission said. No deaths had been reported from the imported cases.

There are currently 15 suspected cases, the commission said, adding that 7,236 close contacts were still under medical observation after 144 people were released from medical observation Sunday.

Also on Sunday, seven new asymptomatic cases, including one imported from abroad, were reported on the mainland. One asymptomatic case was re-categorized as a confirmed case. A total of three asymptomatic cases were released from medical observation, according to the commission.

The commission said 114 asymptomatic cases, including 56 from abroad, were still under medical observation.

By Sunday, 1,131 confirmed cases, including five deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 45 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 446 in Taiwan, including seven deaths.

A total of 1,078 patients in the Hong Kong SAR, 45 in the Macao SAR, and 434 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
