Police: 53 arrested for unlawful assembly in Hong Kong

Police arrested 53 persons, including 41 males and 12 females, for unlawful assembly in Mongkok district on Sunday afternoon, according to a statement from the Hong Kong Police Force. 

Some protesters gathered along Nathan Road from Jordan to Mongkok after 3:00pm on Sunday. Some occupied roads, chanted slogans and behaved in a disorderly manner.

Despite repeated warnings given by police, some refused to leave and continued to gather and behave in a disorderly manner in Mongkok. In the vicinity of Dundas Street, police officers were jostled thus pepper spray was used to stop the illegal acts, according to the statement. 

In view of the situation, police took resolute enforcement actions and arrest operation. At around 5:00pm, police intercepted some protesters near Sai Yeung Choi Street, Mongkok and arrested 53 persons, including 41 males and 12 females, for unlawful assembly.

Police will closely monitor the situation of various districts and proactively intercept suspicious persons to combat and prevent crimes. If anyone attempts to go to other areas and commit crime, police will attend the scene swiftly and take resolute enforcement actions.
