Hong Kong fencing team has bagged a gold and two bronze on the first full day of competitions at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
After winning the historic gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, foil fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long, the city’s first Olympic medalist in fencing, continued the momentum and captured a gold medal in Hangzhou on Sunday.
Epee fencer Vivian Kong Man-wai, a three-time individual Asian champion and two-time Olympian, and another foil fencer Ryan Choi Chun-yin both clinched a bronze medal.
A total of 24 Hong Kong fencers have joined the city’s largest-ever delegation to participate in the Hangzhou Games.
On Sunday morning, Hong Kong took the first gold medal after rowers Lam San-tung and Wong Wai-chun won the men's coxless pair final.
Swimming star Siobhan Haughey took a bronze in the women’s 50-meter breaststroke. Wushu athlete Chen Suijin also won a bronze medal in women's Taijiquan and Taijijian All-Round.
In Hong Kong, various shopping malls and 36 designated sports centers across the city broadcast Saturday’s opening ceremony and Sunday’s competitions, drawing lots of residents to watch the grand event and cheer for the athletes.
Some residents said the atmosphere of watching sports events in shopping malls is livelier than at home. They further mentioned that they rarely watch sports events live on regular days, believing the broadcasting at public venues would draw more attention to the athletes and also increase passenger flows of shopping malls.
Many also applauded and cheered when seeing Hong Kong team bagged its first gold medal and Edgar Cheung won the final, saying the good result has offered greater motivation for the general public to engage in sports.
On Monday and Tuesday, another sports star Siobhan Haughey will compete for her strong events, the women's 200m and 100m freestyle. She won two silver medals in the events at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, becoming the first Hong Kong swimmer to win an Olympic medal.
