Hong Kong athletes have won praise for their record-breaking performance at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou by clinching a total of 53 medals — eight golds, 16 silvers and 29 bronzes — as Asia’s premier sporting event closed in the Zheijiang provincial capital on Sunday.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Sunday praised the special administrative region’s athletes’ perseverance and distinguished performance, saying they lived up to the SAR’s expectations with their biggest-ever medals haul.

In a letter to the city’s team to the Asiad, the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region expressed its congratulations to the athletes for their best-ever performance at the Games.

The athletes’ performance has shown the spirit of Hong Kong athletes and the mission and responsibility of the city’s young people, presenting the world a positive image of Hong Kong, the letter read.

The Liaison Office called on Hong Kong athletes to promote sportsmanship and the Olympics spirit and actively contribute to the building of a better city and stronger country by upholding the “one country, two systems” principle to vigorously promote mainstream values that are compatible with “one country, two systems”, with patriotism at the core.

“Hong Kong athletes have endured arduous training over the years and fought hard in the competitions, displaying professional sportsmanship. I believe that all Hong Kong people, like myself, are extremely proud of the grace shown by all our athletes at the Games,” Lee said.
