BEIJING - The national commission for disaster prevention, reduction and relief on Sunday called for strengthening the inspection of subways, overpasses, underpasses and ice-prone roads to effectively prevent accidents amid cold weather.
More efforts should be made to strengthen monitoring, forecasting and the issuing of alerts, and to initiate emergency response in a timely manner, the commission said in a circular to local authorities.

A working group was sent to Yuanqu, a Shanxi county hit by power outages due to heavy snowfall, to guide the work of restoring power supply and heating, distributing disaster relief supplies, and securing people's basic living needs
The circular said it is necessary to reinforce the monitoring of power-grid operation, ensure energy security with increased production and supply, and pay close attention to the supply and prices of commodities that are important to livelihoods.
Shanxi received relief
Disaster relief supplies and lighting equipment have reached areas hit by heavy snowfall in North China's Shanxi province on Sunday, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management.
Supplies including 10,000 cotton coats, 10,000 quilts and 5,000 sets of household emergency lighting equipment were urgently allocated by the ministry and the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration to ensure the safety and warmth of the locals.
