Integrated exploratory learning and travel experiences, study tours have become the latest trend in education and are now incorporated into the primary and secondary curriculum in Chinese mainland. A wide range of STEM/STEAM programs are available in the market and are highly popular among schools and parents. Recently, a group of primary students from Shenzhen Press, Education & Media Group made a special cross-border trip to Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) to join “Disney’s STEM Exploration”, where they learned while having fun in the magical world.
Tailored for primary students, "Disney’s STEM Exploration" focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through hands-on experiments, the program aims to cultivate problem-solving skills, inspire creative thinking and foster curiosity. Guided by Disney facilitators, students delved into the scientific theories behind the park’s attractions, gaining the understanding that STEM is closely related to everyday life. For example, through the experience of the “Mad Hatter Tea Cups”, these students explored the centripetal and centrifugal forces in action. Xiong Zelin, a Futian Liyuan Foreign Language Primary School student, shared, "This study tour was fascinating! We learned a lot of physics in an engaging way. For example, when observing the loading capacity of bridges in a themed land, the instructor explained mechanics and their applications in the real world.”
Xiang Jiayi, a P5 student from Caopu Primary School in Luohu District, said, “Before each topic, the instructor explained the theories and conducted experiments. Experiencing the spinning cups afterwards made the concepts of the centripetal and centrifugal forces so much more memorable!”
Ouyang Yikun, a Hongling Experimental Primary School student in Futian District, said, “We have been learning in a joyful atmosphere this time. And the fun elements of the program kept us focused. Completing learning tasks around the park and receiving rewards from the instructor also made staying engaged throughout the program easy.”
Students also explored the golden ratio in mathematical concepts through the “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle!” attraction. The program referenced the Education Bureau's Education Curriculum Guide and incorporated insights from primary school principals and teachers to ensure it complements school syllabuses. Students not only grasp theoretical theory but also can apply it to everyday scenarios, thereby enhancing their problem-solving and logical thinking skills.
Christine Ng, Senior Disney Youth Programs Director at HKDL, said, "HKDL's extensive facilities and immersive attractions provide an unparalleled environment for STEM and STEAM education, offering students a relaxed and enjoyable setting to explore knowledge. In this interactive atmosphere, students' curiosity is heightened. Observing scientific phenomena and experiencing theories firsthand deepens their understanding, enabling them to apply concepts in everyday life while fostering innovative thinking and valuable life skills."
Incorporating arts for younger students to experience the wonders of STEAM
For younger students, there is "Disney STEAM Missions: Land, Sea, and Air", designed for K3 to P3 learners. This program integrates STEM with art and HKDL’s unique features, immersing students in an exploring journey across the park. They learn the properties of water and the visual effects of graphic design in “it's a small world”, discover 3D shapes at “Castle of Magical Dreams”, and learn about electricity, motion, and the properties of air through ride experiences and interactive activities. Explore the world from all directions: land, sea and air.
Interesting challenges and sticker rewards are incorporated into the program to foster enthusiasm and attention. Mickey Mouse-themed activities further enhance students' interest in STEAM aspects and cultivate valuable life skills like creativity, logical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork.
Creating Magical Learning Journeys for Youth
HKDL strongly believes that nurturing children to explore, inspire and unlock their potential is essential to creating a magical and meaningful learning experience. Since its launch in 2006, the Disney Youth Programs have brought unique, engaging learning experiences to more than 800,000 students. Encompassing a wide array of topics such as physical science, animation, performing arts, liberal studies, and environmental conservation, the programs target students from kindergarten to tertiary levels and Youth Uniform Groups and Parent-Teacher Associations.
In addition to local schools, the program has drawn participation from Chinese mainland, Singapore, Japan, and Southeast Asia as students broaden their horizons, develop their potential, and enjoy a fun learning journey in the magical world of HKDL.
