Hong Kong Disneyland Resort unveils HK’s first, largest car park solar canopy project
By China Daily

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) recently inaugurated Hong Kong’s first and largest car park solar canopy in cast members car park, featuring nearly 200 bi-facial solar panels and providing shelter for 40 parking spaces in the first phase. This initiative is part of HKDL’s continued efforts in conservation and renewable energy adoption, reinforcing its leading position in sustainable energy and pioneering environmental initiatives in Hong Kong.

A key highlight of the project is the resort’s first-ever use of bi-facial solar panels, which generate electricity from both sides. In addition to absorbing sunlight from the front, the back of the panels also absorb sunlight reflected from the ground, increasing energy generation by nearly 10% compared to traditional single-sided panels.

This car park solar canopy project consists of two phases, with the second phase about to commence construction. Upon completion, the entire project will feature a 200 kilowatt (kW) solar canopy, with close to 400 bi-facial solar panels, generating more than 200,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually and providing shelter for 80 parking spaces.

The project will bring HKDL’s total solar panel count to over 8,300, spanning 60 locations throughout the resort and generating enough energy to power approximately 1,200 three-person households for a year by end of 2025.

Located at the Team Disney outdoor car park for cast members, the first phase of the project was recently completed and opened for use. Mickey Mouse along with Tim Sypko, Senior Vice President, Operations, HKDL; CW Foo, Director, Facility Services, HKDL, with his team; and HKDL Ambassador Gisele Abejero came together to celebrate the project’s achievements.

“At HKDL, we are not only committed to creating magical experiences, but also to reducing our environmental impact,” said Sypko. “We are always looking for ways to innovate and incorporate sustainable practices into our operations. We are proud to be a leader in environmental sustainability in the community, and the completion of Hong Kong's first and largest car park solar canopy project is a testament to that. These collective efforts are part of Disney Planet Possible – tangible actions Disney is taking to put possibility into practice and inspire optimism for a brighter, more sustainable future.”

This car park solar canopy project is just one of many environmental initiatives launched by HKDL. It also supports sustainable transportation with over 130 EV chargers installed in the resort, encouraging guests and cast members for cleaner commuting options.

HKDL’s environmental contributions have consistently received industry recognition. Last year, the resort won several accolades at the “Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence 2023,” “The Second KPMG ESG 50 Awards 2024,” and the “Outstanding ESG Enterprises Recognition Scheme 2024.”

The resort will continue to contribute toward initiatives such as food donation, waste reduction and energy saving, water conservation, and other activities. To learn more, visit DisneyPlanetPossible.com.
