BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.93 percent to 3,324.49 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.61 percent lower at 10,617.26 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by these two indices was about 1.79 trillion yuan ($249.66 billion), down from 1.94 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Stocks related to batteries and banking led the gains, while those in the education and communication service sectors suffered major losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.98 percent to close at 2,182.57 points on Tuesday.
