Education Secretary Christine Choi Yuk-lin on Tuesday reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to supporting Hong Kong educators’ efforts to gain an accurate and in-depth understanding of the Constitution, the Basic Law, and national security education through training courses and various events.

Addressing the opening of a thematic exhibition to mark the 10th National Security Education Day, which falls on April 15, Choi said that the Education Bureau has been actively helping teachers and principals from primary and secondary schools to learn the Constitution, Basic Law, and national security education.

Choi said that various initiatives, including study tours to the Chinese mainland and providing specialized courses led by experts, have been rolled out to deepen teachers’ understanding of national education.

Information about the Constitution, the Basic Law and the national security education has been incorporated in the curriculum of professional development for all newly recruited principals and teachers, Choi said. The training framework of teacher colleges has also been updated to ensure that future teachers can have an accurate and in-depth understanding of national security education and patriotism education, she added.

Choi also called for a wider effort to cultivate patriotism and law-abiding values among Hong Kong residents, saying the exhibition an ideal opportunity for teachers, students and the rest of the community to learn the progress of national security education in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and on the Chinese mainland.

Open to the public on Wednesday, the exhibition will be at the National Security Exhibition Gallery in the Hong Kong Museum of History.

It will present the country’s promotion and practice in national security and review the achievements of the HKSAR in promoting national security education. Robot docents will be deployed to show visitors around and explain the content to them.

Choi said the exhibition, using the gallery’s devices, integrates interactive exhibits, 3D films and games, making learning about national security engaging and accessible.

Established in 2024 as the city’s first national security education bass, the gallery has already attracted over 40,000 students from 110 primary schools, Choi said.

Since the establishment of National Security Education Day in 2015, Hong Kong has held thematic exhibitions around April 15 every year to raise the community’s awareness of safeguarding national security.

In 2015, the National People’s Congress Standing Committee approved the National Security Law, which designates April 15 as National Security Education Day. This initiative aims to raise public awareness of national security, enhance the public’s ability to prevent and resist security risks.
