TOKYO - The number of child abuse cases handled by child consultation centers across Japan reached a record-high 225,509 in fiscal year 2023, government data showed Tuesday.
The data marked an increase of 10,666 cases, or 5 percent, from the previous year, continuing a 33-year consecutive rise since statistics began, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

Among the cases reported, psychological abuse totaled 134,948, of which 78,914 were classified as witnessed domestic violence. Physical abuse accounted for 51,623 cases, neglect (parental abandonment) for 36,465 cases, and sexual abuse for 2,473 cases.
By region, Tokyo had the highest number of cases at 19,488, while Tottori had the lowest at 213.
