A slew of mega events held in Hong Kong this month has brought more than over 3.4 million visitors to the city, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.

Writing in Sunday blog, Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po said that, as of Friday, visitor numbers had surged 12 percent year-on-year, including some 960,000 non-Chinese mainland travelers.

Hotel industry representatives have reported occupancy rates of up to 90 percent in popular districts, Chan said. “Retailers noted that the skyrocketing increase in foot traffic has a positive impact on business.”

The impressive visitor turnout comes as part of the “Hong Kong Super March” campaign launched by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, showcasing the city through a packed schedule of mega events in sports, music, arts and culture, such as Art Basel and the Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament.

The finance chief noted that this year’s three-day Hong Kong Sevens, which ends today, is expected to see a record 140,000 spectators.

The tournament, held at Kai Tak Sports Park, which opened this month, provided a larger venue with world-class facilities for the matches. “All 60-plus corporate boxes at the venue were sold out well in advance. Many corporate executives who came to Hong Kong this week for financial events told me they were looking forward to watching the rugby matches and participating in other cultural events after their intensive business meetings,” Chan said.

The international trendy cultural event, ComplexCon, recorded 35,000 attendees this year -- up 16 percent year-on-year. “Various merchandise and specialty products were highly popular, and the lively atmosphere encouraged spending, with total sales over the three-day event exceeding HK$87 million ($11.15 million),” he said.

“While talking with international guests, one consistent feedback I received was that they believe Hong Kong has regained its former vitality and energy, and their perception of Hong Kong has become optimistic,” Chan said.
