The central government’s representative body in Hong Kong welcomes the passage of the resolution to legislate a national security law for the special administrative region, saying that the law would contribute greatly to the city’s long-term stability and prosperity.

The resolution was passed at China’s top legislature National People’s Congress on Thursday afternoon. Following the passage of the resolution, its Standing Committee will commence to draft a national security law for Hong Kong against acts of secession, subversion, terrorism and colluding with external forces in Hong Kong.

A spokesman for the central government’s liaison office in the HKSAR said the office firmly supports the endorsement of a resolution by the country's top legislature to enact a national security law for the city, saying it shows the shared wish of Chinese people.

“It means a lot to Hong Kong’s long-term stability and prosperity and the successful practice of ‘one country, two systems’ principle,” the spokesperson said, according to State broadcast CCTV.

Expecting the legislative work to begin as soon as possible, the office said it will take on its role to reflect Hong Kong people’s opinions. It’s believed that Hong Kong will be back on the right track, and residents will see a return to peaceful life under the protection of the law, he added.

The national security legislation for Hong Kong was introduced after the city had been embroiled in violent protests since June last year.

Hong Kong has failed to enact its own national security law as required by Article 23 of the Basic Law, the city’s constitutional document.
