HONG KONG - A Shenzhen court on Monday concluded the trial of 10 of the 12 Hong Kong fugitives who were detained by the Chinese coastguards for illegally entering the mainland.
Yantian People’s District Court of Shenzhen said in a statement that the court had listened to both prosecutors and defense lawyers and a verdict will be passed down on another day. A specific date was not revealed in the statement.

In addition to the 10, two underage suspects will undergo private hearings on a separate day, Yantian People’s Procuratorate in Shenzhen said
The court also noted that the trial, which was conducted openly and in accordance with the law, was attended by journalists, family members of the defendants, and Hong Kong and Shenzhen delegates to Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Shenzhen Municipal Committee.
Among the 10, eight were charged with crossing borders unlawfully and two were charged with planning an illegal crossing.
According to Article 318 and Article 322 of Criminal Law of the People’s Republic of China, anyone who organizes people to illegally cross the national border shall be sentenced to not less than two years and not more than seven years of fixed-term imprisonment; anyone who illegally crosses the national border, if the circumstances are serious, shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of no more than one year.
In addition to the 10, two underage suspects will undergo private hearings on a separate day, Yantian People’s Procuratorate in Shenzhen said earlier this month.

All 12 fugitives in Hong Kong were facing charges related to last year’s anti-government protests. They were caught when they were attempting to flee to Taiwan on Shenzhen waters.
