HONG KONG - Hong Kong police said on Tuesday that they had arrested two men suspected of providing materials for making explosives intended to disrupt Hong Kong's order during the upcoming Chinese New Year.

Police found 23.5 kg of materials for making explosives, and also seized a large number of bows and arrows, suspected stun guns and telescopic sticks

Senior Superintendent of Organized Crime and Triad Bureau Ho Chun-tung said at a press briefing that police arrested the two men, aged 42 and 62, in Fanling in the New Territories on Monday and found 23.5 kg of materials for making explosives, including potassium nitrate, sulfur, and suspected magnesium powder.

Police also seized a large number of bows and arrows, suspected stun guns and telescopic sticks.

Ho said the two men were suspected of conspiracy to produce explosives, and possessing offensive weapons and ammunition without a licence. He said the case was still under investigation and did not rule out that more people will be arrested.

Ho said the Hong Kong society was gradually returning to stability, adding that police will continue to combat violent crime in a timely manner to protect Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.
