MADRID - FC Barcelona on Sunday confirmed that Portuguese winger Francisco Trincao will spend the coming season on loan at Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Both Barcelona and Wolves announced the news on their respective websites, with the English side having the option to make the move permanent at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Trincao joined Barcelona from Portuguese side Sporting Braga for 30 million euros a year ago. Despite making 42 first-team appearances, he failed to impress Barca coach Ronald Koeman.

The winger started just 10 games and failed to justify the price Barca paid for him, scoring just three goals - one against Real Betis and two against Alaves.

Barcelona's poor economic situation means the club needs to reduce the number of players on their books, with left-back Junior Firpo expected to join Leeds United in the coming days, while Barcelona-based sports newspaper El Mundo Deportivo wrote on Sunday that the club is willing to give free transfers to defender Samuel Umtiti and midfielder Miralem Pjanic.

Pjanic joined Barca from Juventus just a year ago in a deal reportedly worth around 60 million euros, with midfielder Arthur Melo also moving the other way.
