HK's industrial production up 3.9% in Q1

HONG KONG - Hong Kong’s industrial production rose by 3.9 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, the Census and Statistics Department said Thursday.

The C&SD said in a statement that the increase in the index of industrial production for manufacturing industries was recorded after a year-on-year decrease of 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The food, beverages and tobacco industry saw the largest increase in output volume of 5.4 percent, followed by the paper products, printing and reproduction of recorded media industry (2.4 percent), the textiles and wearing apparel industry (2.0 percent), and the metal, computer, electronic and optical products, machinery and equipment industry (0.6 percent).

The department also said that the territory’s producer price index increased by 1.0 percent in the first quarter compared with a year earlier and aftera year-on-year decrease of 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The increases in producer prices were recorded mainly in the paper products, printing and reproduction of recorded media industry (3.7 percent), the food, beverages and tobacco industry (2.4 percent), and the metal, computer, electronic and optical products, machinery and equipment industry (0.4 percent).

On the other hand, producer prices in the textiles and wearing apparel industry decreased by 0.1 percent, the department said.
