QS rankings: 5 HK universities among world's top 70

HONG KONG - Five Hong Kong universities made it to the top 70 in the latest QS World University Rankings released on Wednesday.

Most of the five universities saw their rankings drop in the British rankings firm’s 2024 report and only The Hong Kong Polytechnic University retained its 65th spot from last year.  

The University of Hong Kong remained the city’s best tertiary institution, but it slipped five places to 26th in the global rankings, tying with Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

In Asia, National University of Singapore retained the top spot, while ranking 8th globally, followed by Peking University, Tsinghua University, and HKU and NTU Singapore

The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology dropped nine and 20 places, respectively, ranking 47th and 60th on the list.

The City University of Hong Kong also saw its ranking slip 16 places to 70th from 54th last year, according to the report.

Outside the top 70, Hong Kong Baptist University dropped to the 295th spot, slipping 14 places from 281st last year, while Lingnan University landed in the 641-650 range.

The latest annual rankings reflected the performance of 1,500 higher education institutions across the world based on nine indicators: Academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, international research network, employment outcomes, and sustainability.

Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology topped the list for the 12th consecutive year, followed by the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Harvard University, and Stanford University.
