ANKARA - The Turkish military carried out airstrikes against the Syrian Kurdish Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria, Türkiye's Defense Ministry said on Thursday evening.
Air operations were carried out against YPG targets in Tal Rifaat, Jazira and Derik regions, the ministry said in a statement.
The airstrikes hit 30 targets, including oil wells and storage facilities, as well as caves, bunkers, shelters and warehouses, the statement added.
Earlier in the day, the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) hit the weapons and ammunition warehouses of the YPG by armed drones, the semi-official Anadolu Agency reported.
The Syrian Arab News Agency said that two electricity plants and one water station went out of service in the northeastern province of Al-Hasakah as a result of the Turkish shelling.
The operations came after a suicidal bomb attack in Türkiye's capital Ankara on Sunday. The attack targeted at the entrance of the Turkish Interior Ministry building in Ankara, leaving two assailants dead and two police officers wounded.
On Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned that all the PKK and the YPG infrastructure and energy facilities in Syria and Iraq were now "legitimate targets" for the Turkish military

The Turkish Interior Ministry said the two attackers were identified as the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) members.

The Turkish Armed Forces has carried out three air operations against the PKK targets in northern Iraq since Sunday.
The Turkish army launched Operation Euphrates Shield in 2016, Operation Olive Branch in 2018, Operation Peace Spring in 2019, and Operation Spring Shield in 2020 in northern Syria in order to create a YPG-free zone along its border within the neighboring country.
The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union, has been rebelling against the Turkish government for more than three decades. Türkiye sees the YPG group as the Syrian branch of the PKK.

"From now on, all PKK/YPG infrastructure, superstructure facilities, and energy facilities in Iraq and Syria are legitimate targets of our security forces," Fidan announced in a news conference on Wednesday.
As Thursday saw Turkish drones conducting airstrikes on YPG installations in northeast Syria, a Turkish unmanned drone was shot down by a US F-16 fighter jet in proximity to US troops, reflecting the volatile situation in that region.
