Arab League chief, Russian minister to discuss Gaza conflict

CAIRO - Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, headed on Sunday to Russia to discuss developments in the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Aboul-Gheit flew to Moscow on a working visit at the invitation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, spokesman for the AL Secretary-General, Gamal Roshdy, said in a statement.

The visit will include an expanded session of discussions with Lavrov on regional and international issues, most notably the ongoing escalation in the Gaza Strip.

The visit came after the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Saturday launched a surprise attack on Israeli towns adjacent to the Gaza Strip, which has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 600 Israelis, while the death toll from Israeli retaliatory attacks on Gaza Strip has risen to 370.

In a separate phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday, King Abdullah II of Jordan stressed Jordan's unwavering position towards the Palestinian cause

King Abdullah II of Jordan and United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Sunday discussed over phone the dangerous military escalation in Gaza and the need for the Palestinians and the Israelis to exercise self-restraint.  In a separate phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday, the Jordanian king stressed Jordan's unwavering position towards the Palestinian cause.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto also discussed on Sunday the recent developments in West Asia, particularly the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday that Türkiye is ready to do its part to stop the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and reduce tension.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Sunday expressed his country's support for the Palestinian nation's "legitimate defense" against Israel. He made the remarks in a message to congratulate the "brilliant victory of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance against Israel," according to a statement published on the website of the Iranian president's office.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday discussed the military escalation. During a phone conversation, the two presidents highlighted the danger of the absence of a political prospect and the exacerbation of the current conditions, which threaten civilians' lives as well as the region's security and stability, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.
