HK cancels all storm warnings as Koinu moves away

The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled all typhoon signals on Monday afternoon as Typhoon Koinu gradually departed the region, following a period of city-wide disruption on Sunday.

The Observatory cancelled the Standy Signal No 1 at 4:20 pm but reminded the public that the squally showers and thunderstorms associated with Koinu were still affecting the region,

As of 4:40 pm, the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal was still in force, which meant that heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall over Hong Kong, exceeding 30 millimeters an hour.

According to the weather watchdog, Koinu tracked westwards steadily in the past few hours. It continued to weaken as it moved away from the Pearl River Estuary and weakened. However, intense rain bands associated with Koinu continued to affect the region. Occasional gale winds are still affecting some parts of Hong Kong .

All day schools remain suspended on Monday to ensure students' safety.

Rail service frequencies are gradually being increased to peak schedules to meet passenger demand. The MTR Bus service resumed after Signal No 3 was hoisted.

Citybus routes B7 and S1 have resumed limited, with a headway of 30 minutes. Most daytime routes of the Citybus resumed services at 11 am, while Kowloon Motor Bus and Long Win Bus restarted operations at 11:40 am.

Sun Ferry’s local ferry services will also resume from 1pm onwards.

Hong Kong International Airport is operating generally normally today, with an estimated 76 flights taking off and landing, and fewer than 10 flights canceled.

The Airport Authority Hong Kong said it will communicate with the MTR to explore how to maintain limited services during inclement weather, ensuring that passengers arriving in Hong Kong do not have to wait for too long.

Due to landslide, road subsidence, fallen tree and flooding, some road sections are still being closed to all traffic on Monday morning, including all lanes of Yiu Hing Road (both directions).

All post offices of Hong Kong Post will be closed and delivery services will be suspended on Monday. Hong Kong Metropolitan University canceled all classes scheduled before 6 pm on Monday.

Hong Kong Observatory raised the storm signal No 9 at 7 pm on Sunday night as the eye of Typhoon Koinu approached the Pearl River Estuary.

According to the Hospital Authority, as at 8 am today, 28 people, including 15 men and 13 women, sought medical treatment at public hospitals during the typhoon period.

The Home Affairs Department has so far opened 29 temporary shelters 289 people have sought refuge.

As at 8.40 am on Monday, the Fire Services Department and the Government's 1823 Call Centre received 13 reports and 10 reports of fallen trees respectively, while the Civil Engineering and Development Department received one report of landslide. In addition, the Drainage Services Department (DSD) has received four confirmed flooding cases.

DSD officials said they there had been four reports of flooding as of 8:30 am, with two cases in Eastern District, one case in Yau Tsim Mong District, and one case in Islands District.

Over 80 emergency response teams have been deployed inspect locations prone to flooding. The department activated its Emergency Control Centre on Sunday morning, and said it will keep in close contact with related departments.
