3 Slovak parties agree to form coalition government

BRATISLAVA — The Smer-SD party, HLAS and the Slovak National Party signed a memorandum of understanding and agreed to form a coalition government on Wednesday.

They agreed on the distribution of governmental posts with the prime ministerial post going to Smer-SD and the parliamentary chair to HLAS' nominee, local reports said. At the same time, they also divided the ministries.

According to the memorandum, the three parties said Slovakia's foreign policy orientation will keep based on the membership of the European Union and NATO, as well as other important international organizations "while fully respecting the sovereignty and national interests of the Slovak Republic, and strengthening patriotism."

During Slovakia's parliamentary election on Sept 30, the left-wing Smer-SD party gained 22.94 percent of the votes, followed by the Progressive Slovakia party winning 17.96 percent of the votes, and HLAS, founded by former members of Smer-SD in 2020, with 14.7 percent.

As the Smer-SD party won 42 seats in the 150-member House, falling short of 75 seats, it has to ally with other parties to form a coalition government.
