The Hong Kong Science Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui is to be converted into a museum displaying the nation’s development and achievements, according to a government plan submitted to the city’s legislature revealed on Wednesday.

The new museum will occupy the current site of the science museum as well as adjacent land.

The Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin, New Territories, will become the new science museum, with the heritage museum’s exhibits being shared between different museums citywide.

In his second Policy Address delivered in October, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said the government will set up a museum to showcase the development and achievements of the country, covering its history, politics, economic development and culture.

The new museum — which has yet to be named — will also include Hong Kong-related materials to help visitors learn about the city’s role the country’s development. No opening date has yet been announced

The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau said the science museum is an ideal location for the new museum as it should be located in the city center, which is convenient for both residents and tourists.

Additionally, it should also have enough space to house exhibits that showcase the comprehensive development and achievements of the country.

According to the bureau, the new museum is expected to present the histories of Chinese people’s heroic resistance against foreign invasions, the development of the Communist Party of China, the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, as well as the nation’s economic, cultural and social developments since the reform and opening-up – which began in late 1970s.

The new museum — which has yet to be named — will also include Hong Kong-related materials to help visitors learn about the city’s role the country’s development. No opening date has yet been announced.

The authorities believed the collections to be displayed in the new museum can take reference from the National Archives of Publications and Culture, the Museum of the CPC and the exhibition "The Road of Rejuvenation" at the National Museum of China.

The new museum is also expected to co-organize exhibitions on different themes with other museums on the Chinese mainland.

Before the commissioning of the new museum, the bureau, starting next year, will establish a special exhibition hall at the Hong Kong Museum of History, next to the science museum, to introduce relevant topics, such as the nation's latest scientific and technological development, and intangible cultural heritages.

Furthermore, to raise residents', especially juveniles’, awareness of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the government’s latest Policy Address also announced to convert the existing Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence into the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence.
