BEIJING – The Chinese military on Friday urged the Philippines to abandon its attempts to stir up tensions in the South China Sea to pursue benefits.
Defense Ministry spokesman Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang said the reason behind the Philippines' drawing some out-of-the-region countries to carry out so-called joint naval patrols was clear – it wants to use foreign forces' assistance to make troubles in the South China Sea.

"Such acts would only increase tensions in the South China Sea and jeopardize peace and stability in the region,” he said in a statement in response to a request for a comment on the recent joint patrol by militaries from the United States and the Philippines.
“We urge the Philippines to dispel its speculative mentality and stop irresponsible hyping.”
China always sticks to the principle that defense cooperation shall not compromise the interests of any third party nor damage the regional peace and safety, said the spokesman.
