Survey: HK sees growing trend toward vegetarian lifestyle

A recent survey shows that Hong Kong is witnessing a growing trend toward a vegetarian lifestyle, with a significant number of respondents opting for such a diet to support environmental protection and sustainable development.

Taste of Veg — a platform focusing on promoting a green lifestyle — released the survey results on Thursday, after interviewing 2,300 residents who are aged 15 years or older, about their eating habits and attitudes to vegetarian foods.

According to the survey, 84 percent of respondents agreed that a vegetarian diet is good for the environment, and 68 percent chose a vegetarian diet in support of sustainable development.

“Data reflected that vegetarianism is no longer only a personal matter, but is closely related to global development,” the survey showed.

Angela Lee, general manager of Taste of Veg, said that for every 200 grams of beef reduction an adult eats, it is enough to reduce carbon emissions by 5.4 kilograms, save about 3,091 liters of water, and reduce the use of 65.2 square meters of forest.

Despite the increasing trend toward vegetarianism, 59 percent of respondents said that it’s still difficult to find information about vegetarian restaurants.

Culsin Li, managing director of Baobab Tree Event Management Co, said she hopes more vegetarian pre-prepared dishes can be produced, which she believes will act as a stepping stone for restaurants to enter the vegetarian market.

The survey also reminded people that regardless of whether they are vegetarians, it’s important to stick to a varied diet.
