Hong Kong has 7,447,700 land-based non-institutional population, with women outnumbering men, as of 2023, the Census and Statistics Department revealed on Friday.
Sha Tin, Yuen Long and Kwun Tong are home to the largest population among all District Council districts, the department said in its "Population and Household Statistics Analysed by District Council District 2023" report.
The report provides information on the socio-economic characteristics of the land-based non-institutional population – resident population excluding inmates of institutions and persons living on board vessels – in 2023 at the District Council district level.
While the median monthly household income was HK$30,000, it was HK$38,300 for economically active households
The overall sex ratio recorded was 837 males per 1,000 females, with the sex ratios in Wan Chai, Central and Western and Eastern particularly low.
Islands had the largest proportion of children aged under 15, while Eastern had the largest proportion of persons aged 65 and over, according to the report. Islands had the lowest median age, while Eastern and Wong Tai Sin had the highest median age, it added.
Regarding domestic household characteristics, the report said there were 2,700,400 domestic households in Hong Kong in 2023. Of them, 77.3 percent were economically active households.
The median monthly household income was HK$30,000 last year, it added.
As for economically active households, the median monthly household income was HK$38,300.
Central and Western and Wan Chai had higher median monthly household income than the other District Council districts, the report added.
As per the report, the size of labor force in 2023 was 3,822,300. The size of the labor force were relatively larger in Yuen Long, Sha Tin and Kwun Tong.
The labor force participation rate was 57.3 percent last year, with males consistently higher than that of females in all District Council districts.
