MANAGUA / HAVANA / UNITED NATIONS - Nicaragua on Saturday severed "all diplomatic relations" with Ecuador as Cuba and Bolivia also condemned the assault on the Mexican embassy in Quito by Ecuadorian police to apprehend former Ecuadorian vice-president Jorge Glas, who took refuge in the embassy last December.

In a statement, the Nicaraguan government expressed its "absolute rejection" and condemnation of the action by the Ecuadorian government, which it described as a "flagrant violation of international law" by forces that should protect the order and security of Ecuadorian citizens and their lives.

Nicaragua withdrew its ambassador from Quito in 2020. With this statement on what happened on Friday night at the Mexican embassy in the Ecuadorian capital, it formalized "the rupture of all diplomatic relations."

Cuba and Bolivia on Saturday also condemned Ecuador for violating Mexican sovereignty.

"All our solidarity with Mexico, in the face of the unacceptable violation of its Embassy in Quito. The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which is an essential component of international law, must be respected by all," said Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on X, formerly Twitter.

On his social media, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez condemned the police incursion as "a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention."

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was alarmed by Ecuador's raid of the Mexican Embassy late Friday, said his spokesman

In a release, the Bolivian Foreign Ministry said that this "flagrant and serious violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations" by Ecuador undermines "the inviolability of diplomatic premises and their personnel."

Bolivian President Luis Arce denounced the "serious and unacceptable" incident through his social network and expressed solidarity with Mexico.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was alarmed by Ecuador's raid of the Mexican embassy, said his spokesman on Saturday.

"The secretary-general is alarmed at the forced entry of Ecuadoran security forces into the premises of the Mexican Embassy in Quito," said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman, in a statement. "He reaffirms the cardinal principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel, emphasizing that this principle must be respected in all cases, in accordance with international law."

Guterres stressed that violations of this principle jeopardize the pursuit of normal international relations, which are critical for the advancement of cooperation between states, said the statement.

The secretary-general calls for moderation and exhorts both governments to solve their differences through peaceful means, it said.
