Some 200 young orators were put through their paces on Saturday, as they took the stage of the semi-final of this year’s 21st Century Cup National English Speaking Competition (Hong Kong Region).
Organized by China Daily and VDO English, an educational arm of China Daily Hong Kong, the competition has been widely acclaimed as one of the most prominent rallying points for English public-speaking enthusiasts in the territory.
Rebecca Curry, adjudicator as well as a member of The English-Speaking Union Hong Kong, said it was “quite unbelievable but definitely inspiring” to see youngsters delivering creative, amusing, and well-organized speeches that reflect courage, confidence, and ability.
The final of the competition, which is now in its seventh year, will be held on May 11.
