Five universities of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have made it to the world’s top 100, with The University of Hong Kong ranked the highest at 17th, according to the 2025 QS World University Rankings published on Wednesday.
Six SAR universities climbed up the rankings compared to last year. HKU notched up one place to break its previous record high at 18th position set in 2007. Last year, it was ranked at 26th.

Two Hong Kong universities have also joined the list of the world’s top 50 – The Chinese University of Hong Kong, which rose from 47th to 36th; and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology which climbed from 60th to 47th position.
Peking University finished 14th in the global rankings, making it the best Chinese mainland university
Both The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The City University of Hong Kong moved up eight places in the rankings – at 57th and 62nd, respectively. Hong Kong Baptist University was up from 295th to 252th.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology topped the list, followed by Imperial College London and Oxford University. The National University of Singapore ranked the highest in Asia and eighth overall.
Peking University finished 14th in the global rankings, making it the best Chinese mainland university.

Organized by international higher education research organization Quacquarelli Symonds, the rankings are based on the performances of more than 1,500 universities worldwide.
Three new indicators for the universities’ performances were added last year -- sustainability, employment and international research network – making a total of nine indicators.
