JERUSALEM - About 14,000 Hamas militants have been killed or arrested in the Israeli onslaught in Gaza, while half of the commanders in the leadership of the military wing were eliminated, the Israeli army said in a statement on Tuesday.

The list of casualties released by the Israeli army includes Marwan Issa, deputy commander of Hamas's Izz ad-Din al-Qassam armed wing, and two of Hamas's five division commanders.

The list does not include Mohammed Deif, the chief of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam armed wing, who was the target of the massive Israeli airstrikes on Saturday, which killed at least 90 Palestinians.

Israel said it targeted Hamas’ shadowy military commander in a massive strike in the crowded south Gaza Strip, according to local health officials. Israeli security officials estimated on Saturday that there is a high probability that Deif was killed in the attack, but Hamas denied it.

The army attacked approximately 37,000 sites from the air in the 365-square km Palestinian enclave and more than 25,000 militant infrastructures and rocket launch sites, the army said.

Israel has been carrying out a large-scale offensive in Gaza, saying it aims to dismantle Hamas after the Islamist group carried out a cross-border rampage on Oct 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and about 240 were taken hostage.
