HK airport passenger volume up 52.8% in H1

HONG KONG – The passenger volume at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) rose 52.8 percent year-on-year to 25.3 million during the first six months of 2024, according to the Hong Kong Airport Authority.

The AAHK said in a statement on Wednesday that flight movements also increased 47.1 percent to 174,745 during the same period while cargo traffic went up by 17.9 percent to 2.4 million tonnes.

On July 21, passenger traffic at HKIA reached a new high after the pandemic, recording a daily throughput of over 171,000, AAHK said.

The growth in passenger volume is expected to continue during the peak of the summer season, AAHK said, adding that passenger traffic on peak days was expected to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2024.

In June, the HKIA handled 4.3 million passengers, up 29.1 percent year-on-year while flight movements saw a 32.3 percent rise to 29,590 compared to the same period in 2023.

AAHK said passenger traffic maintained a steady recovery in June, with all passenger segments, including Hong Kong residents and visitors, experiencing significant growth compared to the same month last year.

Traffic to and from Southeast Asia, the Chinese mainland, and Japan recorded the most significant increases, the AAHK said.

Cargo throughput also maintained its rising momentum and recorded a double-digit year-on-year growth for six consecutive months in the first half of 2024, it added.

AAHK said export cargo remained the main driver of the growth, increasing by 24.9 percent compared to the same month last year.

Among key trading regions, cargo traffic to and from North America, Europe and Southeast Asia increased most significantly last month, it added.

On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume rose significantly by 125.9 percent year-on-year to 48.2 million, while flight movements grew 69.9 percent to 332,040. Cargo throughput increased 14.8 percent increase to 4.7 million tonnes.
