Bus parade to mark HK athletes' triumphant return from Olympics

HONG KONG – To celebrate their historic achievements and triumphant return, the Hong Kong, China delegation to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be lavished with a bus parade across the city and an official reception on Wednesday.  

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government said in a statement that it will join hands with the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China to organize the bus parade from Sha Tin to Tamar Park in Admiralty.  

“The Hong Kong athletes, coaches and other Delegation members will set off from Sha Tin in two open-top buses and arrive at Tamar Park to receive the cheers and applause of the public along the route,” the statement reads.

“Upon their arrival at the Park, the athletes will participate in a sharing session with students on their Olympic experiences,” it added.

At noon, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu will then hold a luncheon with the delegation at Government House for their outstanding achievements and efforts in the Olympic Games.

The athletes will then attend a welcome home reception organized by the HKSAR government and the SF&OC.

The best viewing locations for the bus parade will be Tai Wai Station, the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower and the Central Star Ferry Pier, according to the statement.

Parade route

The buses will depart from the Hong Kong Sports Institute, Sha Tin, at 10:15 am, pass Tai Wai Station at around 10:30 am and arrive at the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower at around 11 am.

The buses will then reach the Central Star Ferry Pier at 11:35 am via the Cross Harbour Tunnel to Queen's Road Central and finish the journey at Tamar Park at around 11:45 am.

Hong Kong athletes achieved historic results at the Paris Olympics by capturing two gold medals and two bronze medals in four sports events. It was the first time that Hong Kong has won more than one gold medal at the same Olympic Games.

Epee fencer Vivian Kong Man-wai clinched the city’s first gold medal by defeating French player Auriane Mallo-Breton 13-12 in the women’s epee final on the first day of the competition on July 28.

Fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long then finished off Italy's Filippo Macchi 15-14, securing his second gold medal after his win at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, making him the first Hong Kong athlete to achieve such a feat.

Hong Kong swimmer Siobhan Haughey also secured two bronze medals in the women’s 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle events.
