HONG KONG – Calligraphy education can cultivate students' understanding and appreciation of classical Chinese culture, inspiring their love and interest in traditional culture, President of The Education University of Hong Kong, Professor John Lee Chi-Kin said on Thursday.
“Learning calligraphy enables students to experience traditional virtues such as respecting teachers, filial piety, and fostering good relationships, thereby shaping good character and moral cultivation through subtle influence,” he said in his welcoming speech at the “Literary and Martial Arts: Calligraphy Education Achievement Awards Ceremony”.
“Calligraphy showcases the core values of Chinese culture and promotes the spirit of Chinese culture through the art of writing,” he said.
The event, held at the EdUHK North Point Study Centre, celebrated the 75th Anniversary of National Day and the 30th anniversary of the university.
Pau Chun-ping, chairperson of the Fung Sun Kwan Chinese Arts Foundation, expressed her hope that students would understand more about national studies through such meaningful cultural events.
Deputy Council Chairman Professor Terence Chan Ho-wah; Deputy Division Chief of the Hong Kong Island Sub-office of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Luo Wenzhen; Chief Planner of “Hong Kong Art”, Liu Weizhong; Deputy Director of “Hong Kong Art”, Angie Yip; Deputy Director of the Hong Kong Golden Bauhinia Art Research Institute, Lai Rongchun; and Chairperson of the Hong Kong Hard Pen Calligraphists’ Association, Lui Chiu-wing were present among others.
