HONG KONG – For the first time since 1959, Hong Kong residents spotted a waterspout over Victoria Harbor shortly after noon on Saturday as gusts hit parts of the city with heavy showers.
A long, black waterspout was clearly identified in videos and photos circulated online. In a clip reportedly shot at the Tai Wan Shan Swimming Pool in Hung Hom, a waterspout appeared close to the shore in contact with sea water, with onlookers amazed.
The Hong Kong Observatory said the waterspout, which was reported at about 12:30pm, is the first one being spotted over the harbor since the record began in 1959.
Weathermen had warned residents in the eastern part of the city about showers and severe squally thunderstorms caused by an upper-air disturbance.
People outdoors were also told to be aware of violent gusts.
