SEOUL - The Republic of Korea's military fired shots south of the inter-Korean border after Seoul claimed that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) exploded parts of roads connected to ROK, ROK's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said Tuesday.

The JCS said in a statement that the DPRK military carried out detonations for the presumed purpose of blockading roads on the DPRK side of the western Gyeongui and the eastern Donghae lines, north of the military demarcation line (MDL), at around 12:00 pm local time (0300 GMT).

In response, the ROK military fired shots in areas south of the MDL, the JCS noted.

The General Staff of the Korean People's Army of the DPRK said on Oct 9 that it would completely cut off roads and railways connected to ROK and fortify the relevant areas of its side with strong defense structures.

The two Koreas are linked by roads and railways along the western Gyeongui line connecting ROK's border city of Paju to the DPRK's Kaesong and the Donghae line along the east coast.

Meanwhile, Kim Jong-un, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK, on Monday convened a consultative meeting on national defense and security in the latest move by the country to address the escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Tuesday.

Kim was briefed on a general analysis of "the case of enemy's serious provocation that violated the DPRK sovereignty" as well as the country's military counteraction plan, measures for weaponry modernization, status of weapons and equipment production and intelligence operations, the KCNA said.

During the meeting, the DPRK leader set forth the direction of military action under the current circumstances and specified the tasks in the operation of the war deterrent and in exercise of the right to self-defense for safeguarding the national sovereignty, security and interests, according to the KCNA report.

Kim expressed a tough political and military stand of the DPRK ruling party and government at the meeting, the report said.

'Main culprit'

A senior official of the DPRK on Tuesday accused the ROK military of being the "main culprit" of the drone intrusion into the airspace of Pyongyang, state media reported.

The DPRK has "secured clear evidence" showing that the ROK military is "the main culprit" of the hostile provocation of violating the DPRK's sovereignty by intruding into the sky over its capital city of Pyongyang, said Kim Yo-jong, vice-department director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea.

"The provocateurs will have to pay a dear price," the senior DPRK official was quoted by the KCNA as saying.

The DPRK Foreign Ministry issued a statement last Friday evening, accusing ROK of sending drones over Pyongyang. ROK's military denied the accusation on the same day, saying that it did not send drones into the DPRK.
