The Eastern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army mobilized its air and naval forces to monitor two foreign warships as they passed through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday, the command's spokesman said.

Senior Captain Li Xi said in a brief statement on Monday that the United States' destroyer USS Higgins and the Canadian frigate HMCS Vancouver transited through the Strait, and the act was sensationalized by the two sides.

Aircraft and naval ships of the PLA Eastern Theater Command closely monitored the passage and stayed on alert, he said, blasting the US and Canada for making trouble and jeopardizing the peace and stability across the strait.

The spokesman said his command is always on high alert and will resolutely safeguard the national sovereignty and security as well as regional peace and stability.
