TEHRAN/CAIRO - Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday that the country will give a "fitting response" to Israel's "aggression" against its soil.

He made the remarks at a cabinet meeting in Tehran while reacting to Israel's attack early Saturday against certain military targets in Iran, according to a statement published on the website of his office.

"We do not want war but will defend the rights of our people and country. We will give a fitting response to Israel's aggression," Pezeshkian said, blaming "Israel's supporters, with the United States above all", for remaining silent in the face of "Israel's killing of tens of thousands of women and children".

The Iranian president added that "if Israel's aggressions and crimes continue, the tension will expand" in the West Asia region, stressing, "We know the United States is provoking Israel to create these disasters."

"They had promised to end the war if we exercised restraint, but they did not keep their promise," he said.

Pezeshkian also extended condolences for the deaths of four of the Iranian army's air defense forces in the Israeli attack.

In remarks at a session of the Iranian Parliament earlier in the day, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the legislative body's speaker, also vowed that Iran's response to Israel's act of aggression would be "definite".

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Sunday said US complicity in Israel's recent military operation against Iran was "quite clear", the official news agency IRNA reported.

In a live televised interview, he highlighted the US provision of airspace and equipment to Israel for its early Saturday attacks on Iran.

"The Americans' partnership in Israel's (military) operation is quite clear for us. The least they did was to provide Israel's air force with a space corridor, and also, the defense equipment they earlier delivered to Israel is, in a way, considered complicity in this operation against Iran," said Araghchi.

"We maintain that the US partnership in Israel's crimes and escalation of tension in West Asia is quite clear and Washington bears responsibility for it," he said.

The Iranian foreign minister said that Israel had no power in the region without the United States, asserting that Tehran views the United States as complicit not only in Israel's Saturday attacks on Iran but also in all Israeli operations in Gaza, Lebanon, and elsewhere.

He emphasized that these Israeli operations were carried out with political support from the United States, which has prevented any international organization from issuing statements or resolutions against Israel.

He referenced his request for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to condemn Israel's attacks. However, he expressed little hope that the meeting would contribute to deescalating tensions or preventing Israeli actions in the West Asia region, citing the influence of the United States and other Western countries.

The Israel Defense Forces announced early Saturday that it conducted "precise and targeted" airstrikes on targets in Iran in response to recent attacks from the country. Iran's air defense headquarters claimed it successfully countered the Israeli attacks, resulting in only "limited damage".

Earlier on Saturday, Araghchi and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty discussed the latest developments regarding the Israeli attacks on Iran, according to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

During a phone conversation, Abdelatty stressed the need to deescalate, step up efforts to achieve calm, and prevent a regional war that would lead to dire consequences, the ministry said in a statement.

The top Egyptian diplomat also reviewed efforts made by Egypt, in coordination with Qatar and the United States, to reach an agreement for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the full and unconditional entry of humanitarian and medical aid into the Gaza Strip, and the release of hostages and prisoners.
