MEXICO CITY/CARACAS - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday expressed support for Panama after US President-elect Donald Trump threatened to retake control of the Panama Canal.

"The Panama Canal belongs to the Panamanians," said Sheinbaum.

Trump said on Sunday that the fees charged on US ships by Panama "are ridiculous" and he "will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us". Furthermore, Trump said that once he reaches the White House, he will strike Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations.

Sheinbaum said Mexico would never accept foreign interference and was confident that an agreement on migration, trade and tariffs would be reached.

Trump has threatened Canada and Mexico with 25 percent tariffs on their products for failing to control migration into the United States.

Also on Monday, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said Venezuela supports Panama's sovereignty over the Panama Canal.

Venezuela reaffirms its unwavering commitment to Panama's sovereignty over the canal, which was taken back by the heroic efforts of then-Panamanian President Omar Torrijos, the ministry said.

Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino earlier said that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belongs to Panama and will continue to belong to Panama.
