HONG KONG – A star-studded opening ceremony of the Kai Tak Sports Park, which is going to be the largest sports infrastructure in Hong Kong, will be held on Saturday in its 50,000-seat main stadium, with various performances by elite athletes and artists from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.
Designed to serve as a world-class venue for hosting international mega events, the 28-hectare facility’s opening will become the curtain-raiser for the Hong Kong Super March, during which a series of big events, such as sport contests and art exhibitions, will take place.
The 8,500 tickets for the opening ceremony sold out about half an hour after going on sale Friday morning via the government-run ticketing platform Urbtix.
In July 2004, the HKSAR government commissioned the Kai Tak Planning Review and the construction of the sports park began in April 2019.
Snooker aces to meet
The world’s top 32 snooker stars will gather in Hong Kong next week to compete for the champion title of the World Snooker Grand Prix 2025 as well as prizes worth £700,000 ($884,254).
Scheduled to run from Mar 4 through Mar 9 at the Kai Tak Sports Park, the tournament is expected to attract about 5,000 spectators with tickets ranging from HK$80 ($10.29) to HK$2,580.
Apart from a record prize pool, the tournament will also award the winner £180,000 pounds, £80,000 more than that given during the last edition.
The star-stubbed line-up includes world champions Judd Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan, both of whom have secured Hong Kong residency under a talent trawl program, the city’s homegrown player Marco Fu Ka-chun, mainland snooker star Ding Junhui, Mark Selby of England, Neil Robertson of Australia, and current world No. 1 players Kyren Wilson of England.
Jewelry shows to shine
Two jewelry shows organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council will open in early March. While the 11th Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem, and Pearl Show is set to begin on Mar 2 and run through Mar 6, the 41st Hong Kong International Jewelry Show will be held from Mar 4 to Mar 8.
Various jewelry raw materials and pieces will be on show. This year’s designs feature the filigree inlay technique – one of China’s intangible cultural heritage – and the “Panda and Bamboo” jewelry collection, as the country’s “panda economy” booms.
The shows are expected to draw more than 4,000 global exhibitors from more than 40 countries and regions and attract more than 110 buyer missions, reinforcing Hong Kong’s status as an international jewelry sourcing and trading hub.
Cityviews through 50km walk
With a 60-yuan ($8.28) registration fee, hiking enthusiasts can join the 2025 Foshan 50-km hike, which offers a chance to traverse the winding streets and experience the city’s rich history while engaging in a healthy challenge.
Registration for the event, which will begin on Mar 22, lasts until Mar 10.
This year’s event will accommodate 110,000 runners across five distinctive routes, including 30,000 for each of the Chancheng route, Shunde route and Nanhai route, and 10,000 for the Gaoming route and Sanshui route.
