MOSCOW/KYIV - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday cautioned those opposing Russia by invoking French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's failure to conquer Russia some 200 years ago.

Speaking at a meeting with employees and beneficiaries of the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation, Putin said: "There are still people who want to go back to the times of Napoleon, forgetting how it ended."

Putin's remarks came after recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron. In a televised speech on Wednesday, Macron said that Russia poses a threat to France and Europe, announcing that he would consider sending European troops to Ukraine to help enforce a peace deal.

Russia launched another large-scale attack on Ukraine's energy system overnight Friday, Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko said on Facebook.

"The energy and gas infrastructure in various regions of Ukraine is again under massive missile and drone attacks," he wrote.

Rescuers workers and energy sector personnel are working at the sites of the strikes to address the aftermath, Galushchenko said.

He added that all necessary measures are being taken to stabilize energy and gas supplies.
