Hong Kong and Macao members of the nation’s top legislature and political advisory body on Tuesday pledged to present the nation's latest development directions and policies outlined in the two sessions to local communities of the two special administrative regions, so as to better leverage the two SARs’ strategic roles in the national blueprint.

A day after the conclusion of the session of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) convened the closing meeting of its third session, wrapping up this year’s national two sessions.

The NPC, with nearly 3,000 deputies including those from Hong Kong and Macao, approved a series of key documents during the closing meeting, including the Government Work Report, the central and local budgets for 2024 and the 2025 budget drafts, as well as the work reports of the NPC Standing Committee, the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate.

Speaking to reporters after the closing meeting, Ma Fung-kwok, head of the Hong Kong NPC delegation, emphasized the diligent participation of Hong Kong deputies as national legislators over the past week.

In addition to their motions, Hong Kong NPC deputies have submitted over 200 suggestions, delivered 154 speeches and conducted more than 400 media interviews, Ma said.

After returning to Hong Kong, local deputies will proactively convey the essence of the two sessions to people in the city, support the special administrative government’s law-abiding governance, and leverage Hong Kong’s strengths to contribute to the nation’s development, Ma added.

Starry Lee Wai-king, Hong Kong’s sole member of the NPC Standing Committee, expressed confidence that the Hong Kong community will respond positively and take action to meet the country’s need for deeper international exchanges and cooperation, which is highlighted in the Government Work Report.

NPC deputy Priscilla Leung Mei-fun underscored the national lawmakers' responsibility to facilitate communication between the central authorities and local communities. She pledged to introduce national policies to Hong Kong residents and explore ways to enhance "one country, two systems" in the new era.

Maggie Chan Man-ki, another Hong Kong NPC deputy, said the two sessions reflected the nation’s people-centered philosophy in governance. Backed by the nation and connecting to the rest of the world, Hong Kong is poised for greater prosperity, stability, and a brighter future, she added.

Jose Chui Sai-peng, a Macao national lawmaker, said the central authorities responded quickly to Macao NPC deputies’ motions and suggestions during the two sessions.

Chui promised to share with Macao society the economic and social accomplishments of the country last year, underlining the significance of these hard-won results to reinforce the SAR’s confidence in the nation's pursuit of high-quality development.

Grace Wong Kit-cheng, a CPPCC National Committee member from Macao, resonated with the Government Work Report’s emphasis on pursing people-oriented macro policies, which aims to implement more policies and allocate additional resources to increase jobs, reduce people’s burdens and boost consumer spending.

Wong also expressed her hopes that Macao's forthcoming policy address, currently being drafted by the new administration led by Chief Executive Sam Hou-fai, will comprehensively reflect the gist of the national two sessions.
