MONTEVIDEO-- Veteran Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez is close to joining Brazil's Gremio on a free transfer, according to local media reports.

Suarez is a free agent after ending a four-month spell with Montevideo outfit Nacional in November.

The 35-year-old has also been linked with two Mexican clubs, including Cruz Azul, according to Uruguayan sports news outlet Ovacion

It added that Suarez could be convinced to join Gremio by the recent arrival of Uruguayan midfielder Felipe Carballo, who has a good rapport with the former Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid forward.

Gremio returned to Brazil's Serie A in November, 12 months after they were relegated for only the third time in their history.
