Universiade: Olympic champion Zhang clinches fourth gold

CHENGDU - Olympic gold medalist Zhang Yufei bagged her fourth and China's sixth swimming gold at the Chengdu Universiade here on Thursday, as she emerged victorious in the women's 100m freestyle.

After having taken one gold, one silver and one bronze medal at World Aquatics Championships last month, Zhang was soon back into action as the FISU swimming events started on August 1.

The "Butterfly Queen" showed no signs of exhaustion and achieved consecutive successes in all the competitions she entered in Chengdu.

In the women's 100m freestyle, Zhang dominated and touched the wall in 53.34 seconds, followed by Erin Paige Gallagher from South Africa in 54.39 and Kalia Antoniou from Cyprus in 54.82.

Despite her win, Zhang said she had felt quite sleepy during the day. "It's raining today, so it fits for sleeping, and I feel like I have been dreaming for the whole day. Only when I finished the final did I begin to realize I had broken the FISU record again."

In the men's 200m freestyle, Kamil Sieradzki from Poland grabbed the gold, with Tomas Navikonis of Lithuania ranking second and Italy's Giovanni Caserta taking third place.

Lithuania's Kotryna Teterevkova won the first gold for her nation in the women's 100m breaststroke, clocking 1:06.74, with runner-up Kaylene Corbett from South Africa touching home in 1:06.98, and bronze medalist Dominika Anna Sztandera of Poland finishing in 1:07.19.

As to the men's 200m IM, Gabriel Jose Almeida Lopes from Portugal bagged the gold, with Wang Hsing Hao from Chinese Taipei second, and Germany's Marius Zobel third.

Ivan Giovannoni took Italy's second swimming gold medal in the men's 1,500m freestyle, finishing in 15:11.81. Japan's Kaito Tabuchi ranked second in 15:14.60, with Christopher Nagy of the United States rounding out the top three in 15:19.23.
